Intermediate Weekend Project

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 14" Foam Wreath Base
  • 1/4 yd Cotton Prints (8)
  • 1 1/2 yds Cotton Print (for bow)
  • Scissors, Needle, Thread
  • Hot Glue Gun/Glue Gun Sticks
  • Quick Yo-Yo Maker Templates A and B, or Size Small and Size Extra-Large

DIRECTIONS:

To find the downloadable templates click on the "GET PATTERNS" tab above.
  1. Using Template A trace and cut 60 circles from various cotton prints. Fold a scant 1/4" of edge toward the wrong side of fabric all around the circle. Run a large gathering stitch along the folded edge. Pull thread tight with right side of fabric out and tie off thread. Center gathered edge and flatten yoyo by finger pressing outer edge. Continue with all 60 pieces of fabric. Repeat process with Template B, making a total of 40 small yoyos.
  2. If using Quick yoyo Makers, follow instructions on package, making 60 extra-large yoyos and 40 small yoyo.
  3. Cut 2.5" wide strips from one of the printed cottons and wrap foam wreath base, securing ends of fabric with hot glue.
  4. Starting with the outer edge of the wreath, hot glue extra-large yoyos all around so that the edges of each yoyo touch. Continue this process on the front face of the wreath, and finally on the inside edge of wreath, leaving the back of the wreath bare.
  5. Fill in gaps between yoyos with small yoyos.
  6. Cut a strip of fabric 1" x 3." Fold in each long raw edge so that they overlap and hot glue in place. Bring ends together to form a hanging loop and hot glue to the top back of the wreath.
  7. To make a bow, cut a strip of fabric 6" x 52". Fold in half long ways with right sides touching.
  8. Sew along the long edge using 1/2" seam allowance. Press seam to one side and turn right side out.
  9. Press tube along the seam so that the seam is disguised in the fold of the tube.
  10. Tie fabric into a bow.
  11. Mark the desired length of the finished bow tails. Trim tails 1/2" longer than the mark. Tuck ends in and stitch openings closed using a blind stitch.
  12. To make a diagonal end, cut tail at the longest length. Take the corner you want to end as the short part of the diagonal and tuck into the tube, forming the diagonal line. Press in place. Untuck the corner and cut 1/2" from diagonal pressed line. Tuck seam allowance back in and stitch openings closed using a blind stitch.
  13. Hand stitch bow to the wreath.
