Lap Size Puff Quilt

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

• 5/8yd each of 5 Coordinating Cotton Fabric
• 1/2yd of One Coordinating Cotton Fabric
• 2 5/8yd of 44" Muslin
• 3yd Fabric for Backing
• 1/2yd Fabric for Binding
• Approximately 24oz Polyester Fiberfill
• Rotary Cutter, Ruler and Mat
• Basic Sewing Supplies
• Iron and Pressing Surface
• Sewing Machine

DIRECTIONS:

1. Read all instructions before cutting and sewing. Sew with 1/4" seam unless indicated. WOF = width of fabric. Press all fabric before cutting.
2. From each of the five 5/8yd pieces cut four strips 5"x WOF. Subcut into 5" squares so you have 32 squares of each fabric for a total of 160 squares. Label these fabrics as A, B, C, D, and E.
3. From the 1/2yd piece cut three strips 5"x WOF. Subcut into 5" squares so you have 20 squares total. Label this fabric as F.
4. From the muslin cut twenty strips 4 1/2"x WOF. Subcut into 4 1/2" squares so you have 180 squares for the bottom of the puff blocks.
5. As shown in the template, lay a 5" square right side up on a 4 1/2" square matching the top right corners. Using a scant 1/4" seam start to sew along the right edge. When you are about a quarter of the way down stop and match the bottom right corners. Pinch up the excess fabric into a pleat close to the middle. Hold the pleat down as you sew over it. Sew to the end and feed in the next set of squares repeating the process until you chain stitch all 180 pairs. Cut them apart and stitch the next side the same way. Repeat with the third side. Leave the last side open to form a pocket.
6. In a large work area assemble the blocks following the template or arrange in a way to your liking. You will have 15 rows with 12 blocks in each row. Stack each row in order, with the open side to the bottom, and label 1 through 15.
7. Starting with Row 1, sew blocks together making sure the opening is to the bottom. Finger press seams (odd numbered rows to the left and even numbered rows to the right) so they will nest when rows are sewn together. Sew all 15 rows at this time.
8. Lightly stuff each block in Row 1 with fiberfill, about palm size. (Be sure not to over stuff or you may find it hard to sew the rows together later.) As you stuff the blocks form a pleat and pin. Sew down the entire row with a scant 1/4" seam pushing the fiberfill to the side as you stitch. Repeat with each row.
9. Pin or clip Rows 1 and 2 together nesting seams. Stitch with a regular 1/4" seam. Pin Row 3 to 2 and stitch. Continue until all rows are sewn together. You may find that it is easier to sew into groups and then combine your groups rather than row by row.
10. Measure length and width of the quilt and prepare backing to match. Center the quilt wrong sides together to the backing. Pin the edges at corners to be sure quilt top is square to backing. When squared baste around edges. To keep the puffs straight with the backing pull at the pleated part of the blocks and pin at intersections. Carefully stitch in the ditch removing pins as you sew.
11. Cut 6 strips from binding fabric 2 1/2"x WOF. Stitch strips together and press in half. Sew to quilt front, fold over to back and hand stitch in place.
12. Quilt should finish at approximately 48"x 60".
