MEASUREMENTS

Approx 12" [30.5 cm] wide x 14" [35.5 cm] long, excluding handles.

 

GAUGE

13 sc and 14 rows = 4" [10 cm] with smaller hook.

 

Directions

Note: Ch 2 at beg of row does not count as hdc.

 

FRONT and BACK (make alike) With A and smaller hook, ch 43. 1st row: (RS). 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook. 1 hdc in each ch to end of ch. Turn. 41 hdc. 2nd row: Ch 2. Work 1 hdc in horizontal bar created below st in previous row (bar is below loops normally worked on WSsee diagram) in each hdc to end of row. Turn. Proceed as follows: 1st row: (RS). Ch 3 (counts as dc). 1 dc in next hdc. *Ch 1. Skip next hdc. 1 dc in each of next 3 hdc. Rep from * to last 3 hdc. Ch 1. Skip next hdc. 1 dc in each of next 2 hdc. Turn. 2nd row: Ch 3 (counts as dc). 1 dc in next dc. 2 dc in next ch-1 sp. *Ch 1. 3 dc in next ch-1 sp. Rep from * to last ch-1 sp and 2 dc. Ch 1. 2 dc in next ch-1 sp. 1 dc in each of last 2 dc. Turn. 3rd row: Ch 3 (counts as dc). 1 dc in next dc. *Ch 1. 3 dc in next ch-1 sp. Rep from * to last 4 dc. Ch 1. Skip next 2 dc. 1 dc in each of last 2 dc. Turn. Rep 2nd and 3rd rows for pat until piece measures 9" [23 cm] from beg, ending on a WS row.

 

Top Shaping: Right Half:

1st row: (RS). Ch 2. 1 hdc in each of next 17 sts. Hdc2tog. Turn. Leave rem sts unworked. 18 sts. 2nd row: Ch 2. Hdc2tog. Work 1 hdc in horizontal bar created below st in previous row (bar is below loops normally worked on WS-see diagram) in each st to end of row. Turn. 17 sts. 3rd row: Ch 2. 1 hdc in horizontal bar created below st in previous row in each st to last 2 sts. Hdc2tog. Turn. 16 sts. Rep 2nd and 3rd rows twice more, then 2nd row once. Fasten off. 11 sts rem at end of last row.

 

Top Shaping: Left Half:

1st row: (RS). Skip next 3 unworked sts. Join A with sl st to next st. Ch 2. Beg in same sp as join, Hdc2tog. 1 hdc in each st to end of row. Turn. 18 sts. 2nd row: Ch 2. Work 1 hdc in horizontal bar created below st in previous row (bar is below loops normally worked on WS-see diagram) in each st to last 2 sts. Hdc2tog. Turn. 17 sts. 3rd row: Ch 2. Hdc2tog. 1 hdc in horizontal bar created below st in previous row in each st to end of row. Turn. 16 sts. Rep 2nd and 3rd rows twice more, then 2nd row once. Fasten off. 11 sts rem at end of last row.

Top edging: (RS). Join A with sl st to top of right half shaping. Ch 1. Work 16 sc evenly down right half shaping. Work 1 sc in each of 3 skipped sts. Work 16 sc evenly up left half shaping. Fasten off. 35 sc.

HANDLES

Holding 2 strands of B tog, and larger hook, join yarn with sl st to purchased ring. Ch 1. Work 73 sc around ring. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off. With smaller hook, join single strand of A with sl st to any sc. Ch 1. Work 1 sc in each of next 35 sc. Fasten off.

 

Attach Handles: Hold WS of Handle and side of Bag tog, lining up rows of sc. With smaller hook, join A with sl st to first sc. Working through back loop of Handle and front loop of Bag edging only, join Handle and Bag tog by working sl st in each of 35 sc to end of row. Fasten off.

 

Join Front and Back

With WS of Bag pieces tog and smaller hook, join A with sl st at top right corner. Ch 1. Working through both thicknesses, work 1 row of sc evenly down right side edge, along bottom and up left side edge. Fasten off.

 

TASSEL

Wrap B around an 8" [20.5 cm] piece of cardboard 30 times.  Break yarn leaving a long end and thread end through needle. Slip needle through all loops and tie tightly. Remove cardboard and wind yarn tightly around loops 1" [2.5 cm] below fold. Fasten securely. Cut through rem loops and trim ends evenly. Attach Tassel to Bag Handle as shown in picture.
