SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 3/8 yd of white cotton fabric
  • 1/4 yd each of red, red dot, blue, and blue dot cotton fabric
  • 17" square of batting
  • 17" piece of light weight backing
  • Rotary cutter, ruler and mat
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Iron and pressing surface
  • Sewing Machine

DIRECTIONS:

    16-1/2" x 16-1/2" block

  2. Read all instructions before cutting and sewing
  3. Sew with accurate 1/4" seams throughout.
  4. From white fabric cut 2 side borders at 10-1/2" x 2-1/2" and top and bottom at 16-1/2" x 3-1/2"". Set aside for later.
  5. For Row 1 cut 2 - 2-1/2" squares and 1 - 4-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangle from white fabric. Cut 2 - 2-1/2" squares from the blue, and two from each of the red and the red dot.
  6. Follow Diagram A and sew 4 - half square triangle sets and one flying geese set.
  7. Press and sew Row 1 pieces together.
  8. For Row 2 cut from white 2 - 2-1/2" squares; cut a 4-1/2" rectangle from each of the red dot and blue dot. Cut a 2-1/2" square from red and from blue dot fabrics. Follow flying geese instructions in Diagram A and lay out as shown in Diagram A.
  9. Cut a 5-3/4" square from each of the 4 color fabrics. Lay the blue solid on the blue dot right sides together. Draw a line from one corner to another. Stitch 1/4" from each of the line. Cut on the solid line. Press seam towards the darker fabric. Repeat this with the red fabrics. Swap the half square triangles so you have one blue set with a red set. Nest the seams and stitch on the long edge. You will have 2 hourglass squares. Trim to 4-1/2" square.
  10. Press then stitch Row 2 together following Diagram A layout.
  11. For Row 3 to make the quarter square triangle pieces, from white cut 1- 5 3/4" square. Cut in half diagonally. From each of the 4 color fabrics cut a 3 5/8" square. Cut each in half diagonally. You will use one triangle piece of each color. Sew the solids right sides together starting on the blunt edge. Repeat with dotted triangles. Press to the darker side. Sew a unit to each of the white triangles on the long side as shown in Diagram A Quarter Square Triangle. Trim to a 4-1/2" block being sure to center the seam in the unit per diagram before cutting.
  12. From white fabric cut 2 - 4-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles. Sew as shown to make Row 3.
  13. Add side borders. Press. Add top and bottom borders. Press.
  14. Sandwich backing, batting and block top. Quilt in the ditch or as desired.
