- Set of five size 5 double pointed knitting needles
- Stitch Markers
- Large-eyed blunt needle
- Fiberfill stuffing
- MEASUREMENTS:
- Finished Length About 16"
- Finished Diameter About 4"
- GAUGE: 20 sts + 28 rnds = about 4" over St st worked in rnds (k every rnd).
DIRECTIONS:
STITCH EXPLANATION:kfb (knit in front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then knit through back of same st - 1 st increased.
NOTES:
Crayon is worked from the base upwards in St st worked in rnds with contrast color stripes worked in Garter st worked in rnds.
The oval applique is worked separately and sewn onto Crayon.
Exact gauge is not essential for this project. We worked tightly with small needles so that stuffing wouldn't show through.
CRAYON:
BASE:
With A, cast on 8 sts. Divide sts onto 4 double pointed needles, placing 2 sts on each needle. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right-hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Rnd 1 (RS): With A, knit.
Rnd 2: With A, kfb in each st - you will have 16 sts in this rnd.
Rnds 3 and 4: With A, knit.
Rnd 5: With A, kfb in each st around - 32 sts.
Rnds 6-9: With A, knit 4 rnds.
Rnd 10: With A, kfb in each st around - 64 sts.
Rnds 11 and 12: With A, knit 2 rnds.
BODY:
Tip: Don't cut yarn colors until instructed to do so. When you do cut a color, push the yarn tail to the inside of the Crayon.
Rnds 13 and 14: With A, purl.
Rnds 15-24: With A, knit 10 rnds.
Change to B. Do not cut A. Carry A along WS (inside) of Crayon.
Begin stuffing the Crayon and continue to add stuffing as you work.
Rnds 25-30: With B, beg with a knit rnd, work in Garter st worked in rnds (knit 1 rnd, purl 1 rnd) for 6 rnds.
Change to A. Cut B.
Rnds 31-80: With A, knit 50 rnds.
Change to B. Do not cut A. Carry A along WS of Crayon.
Rnds 81-86: With B, rep Rnds 25-30.
Change to A. Cut B.
Work remainder of Crayon with A only.
Rnds 87-96: With A, knit 10 rnds.
Rnds 97 and 98: With A, purl 2 rnds.
Rnds 99 and 100: With A, knit 2 rnds.
Rnd 101: * K2tog; rep from * around - 32 sts.
Rnds 102-105: Knit 4 rnds.
Rnd 106: * K2tog, k2; rep from * around - 24 sts.
Rnds 107-110: Knit 4 rnds.
Rnd 111: * K2tog, k1; rep from * around - 16 sts.
Rnds 112-115: Knit 4 rnds.
Rnd 116: * K2tog; rep from * around - 8 sts.
Rnds 117 and 118: Knit 2 rnds.
Rnd 119: * K2tog; rep from * around - 4 sts.
Bind off, leaving a long yarn tail.
Finish stuffing Crayon. Thread yarn tail into blunt needle and sew tip of Crayon closed.
APPLIQUE:
NOTE: Applique is worked back and forth in rows on just 2 of the double pointed needles.
With B, cast on 2 sts.
Row 1 (WS): Knit.
Row 2: Kfb in each st - 4 sts.
Row 3: Knit.
Row 4: Kfb, k2, kfb - 6 sts.
Row 5: Knit.
Row 6: Kfb, k to last st, kfb - 8 sts.
Rows 7 and 8: Rep Rows 5 and 6 - 10 sts in Row 8.
Rows 9-11: Knit 3 rows.
Row 12: Rep Row 6 - 12 sts.
Rows 13-17: Knit 5 rows.
Row 18: Rep Row 6 - 14 sts.
Rows 19-43: Knit 25 rows.
Row 44: K1, k2tog, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 - 12 sts.
Rows 45-47: Knit 3 rows.
Row 48: K1, k2tog, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 - 10 sts.
Row 49: Knit.
Row 50: Rep Row 48 - 8 sts.
Rows 51-54: Rep Rows 49 and 50 twice - 4 sts in Row 54.
Row 55: Knit.
Row 56: (K2tog) twice - 2 sts.
Row 57: K2.
Bind off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.
FINISHING:
Referring to photo for placement, sew Applique to Crayon.
