  • 4 1/4 yds quilter’s cotton for backing
  • Full size cotton batting
  • Quilter’s curved safety pins
  • Rotary cutter, ruler and mat
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Invisible thread
  • Sewing machine with 1/4" foot and walking foot
  • Iron and pressing surface

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Note: approximate size of the quilt it 70”x84”
  2. Note: seam allowances are 1/4” throughout the project.
  3. For ease of cutting the strips, cut both of the 3 1/4 yd pieces (A & B) into seven sections that are 16” long by WOF. Cut each of the 16”xWOF pieces into sixteen 2 1/2” strips cutting parallel to the selvedge. There will be one hundred and twelve 2 1/2”x16” strips of each of the two colors (A & B). Tip: Cut off the selvedges before cutting up the 3 1/4 yd pieces.
  4. Using the 1/4” foot and all-purpose thread sew the long side of one strip A to the long side of one strip B. Repeat sewing a total of ninety A/B pairs.
  5. Sew two of the A/B pairs together on the long side with the colors alternating A, B, A, B. Repeat making a total of thirty A/B/A/B sets.
  6. Sew another A/B pair on each of the A/B/A/B sets making thirty A/B/A/B/A/B sets.
  7. To complete the blocks sew an A strip on the end of fifteen A/B/A/B/A/B sets making them A/B/A/B/A/B/A sets. On the other fifteen A/B/A/B/A/B sets sew a B strip at the beginning making them B/A/B/A/B/A/B sets. When completed there will be fifteen blocks with A strips at each side of the block and fifteen with B strips at each side of the block.
  8. Press the seams of all blocks in one direction. Trim the blocks to 14 1/2”x14 1/2”.
  9. There will be six rows of blocks with five blocks in each row. Layout the blocks in a checkerboard fashion alternating the color sets and having all one color set going horizontally and the other color set going vertically.
  10. Working one row at a time sew the blocks in each row together. Press the seam allowances away from the horizontal blocks. Repeat sewing together each of the six rows and pressing.
  11. Since the seam allowances were pressed away from the horizontal blocks the seams for the rows will fit together easily. Sew the rows together and press the seams open.
  12. To make the backing cut the backing fabric in half making two 76”XWOF pieces. Cut the selvedges off and sew the two pieces together along one long side. Press the seam open.
  13. Trim the edges of the quilt. Sandwich the backing face down, batting on top of the backing and the patchwork quilt top face up on the batting. Smooth out the layers and pin together with the curved safety pins. Use a lot of pins to securely fasten the layers together. Trim the backing and batting to about 1” from the quilt top edge.
  14. Place the walking foot on the machine and thread the machine with the invisible thread on the top and thread to match the backing on the bobbin. Quilt as desired. Trim the edges of the quilt.
  15. Cut the binding fabric into eight 2 1/4”xWOF strips. Using the strips make the binding and bind the quilt as desired.
