DIRECTIONS:

  1. Enlarge patterns to size indicated on the patterns. To print the patterns, click on the "Download Project PDF" button (above). (Copy centers or office supply stores can enlarge the pattern.)
  2. Cut the selvedge edges off the two water background fabrics and put fabric aside for later use.
  3. Fuse the Shape Flex interfacing on the back of the white print fabric. Trace the teeth on the paper side of the HeatnBond. Fuse the HeatnBond to the back of the interfaced white print. Cut out teeth.
  4. Trace the mouth shape with the erasable marker on the red fabric. Peel off the paper backing and fuse the teeth in the appropriate places on the mouth. Place a piece of Stitch-N-Tear stabilizer behind the mouth. Using the white embroidery thread, satin stitch the two sides of the teeth that point into the mouth, do not satin stitch where the teeth meet the mouth edge. Remove the stabilizer.
  5. Trace inner shark shape and the mouth location on the light gray print. Place the mouth with the teeth on the marked location on the gray fabric, pin in place. Straight stitch around the shark's mouth then trim the excess red fabric from the mouth edge. Trim close to the stitching line.
  6. Using the light gray embroidery thread with stabilizer underneath, satin stitch around the mouth on the straight stitch line. Remove the stabilizer.
  7. Trace the inner shark shape on the medium gray print. Place the light gray print on the medium gray print lining up the markings. Pin in place. Straight stitch on the traced line. Trim close to the stitching line.
  8. Using the light gray embroidery thread and stabilizer underneath, satin stitch around the shark on the straight stitch line. Remove the stabilizer.
  9. Turn to the back side of the shark and trim away the inside of the light gray shark and the inside of the mouth as shown below.
  10. Trace the outer shark shape on the medium gray print and on the light blue solid background fabric where the shark is to be placed. The fabric back ground is turned so the selvedge edges are at the top and bottom. Place the medium gray print on the light blue solid background lining up the markings. Pin in place. Straight stitch on the traced line. Trim close to the stitching line as done in previous steps.
  11. Using the dark gray embroidery thread with stabilizer underneath, satin stitch around the shark as before. Remove the stabilizer.
  12. Trace the eyes and nostrils on the paper side of the HeatnBond then fuse the outer eyes and nostrils to the back of the dark gray solid and the inner eyes on the navy solid. Cut out. Peel off the paper backing and fuse the eyes and nostrils in place.
  13. Using the dark gray embroidery thread with stabilizer underneath the eyes and nostrils, satin stitch around the outside. Use the navy embroidery thread around the inner eye. Remove the stabilizer.
  14. Trace the wave pattern on the poster board and cut out. Use the poster board pattern to trace the waves on the HeatnBond, three for one blue print and two for the other blue print. Trace two more wave sets (one for each blue print) adding another wave to the line see finished quilt for reference.
  15. Fuse the HeatnBond on the back of the Blue prints in the quantity mentioned above. Cut the waves out, peel the paper off the back and arrange on the blue print background fabric. The fabric background is turned so the selvedge edges are at the top and bottom. Using the finished quilt picture as a guide for wave placement, fuse in place. Using the blue embroidery thread with stabilizer underneath satin stitch around the outside of the waves. Remove the stabilizer.
  16. Use the top of the wave pattern to mark waves across the top edge of the bottom water print. Place the bottom print over the edge of the top solid background with the shark applique overlapping the two fabrics by three inches. Pin in place. Sew the straight stitch on the traced line. Trim close to the stitching line as done in previous steps. Using the blue embroidery thread with stabilizer underneath, satin stitch the top of the waves. This holds the bottom half to the top. Remove the stabilizer.
  17. Trim the edges of the quilt top then prepare the borders. Use the orange fabric to cut eight 2"x WOF strips. Sew the strips together in pairs at the short ends. Sew the borders to the top and bottom then the sides of the quilt top. Repeat with the yellow fabric cutting eight 3"x WOF strips and sewing in the same manner.
  18. Piece together the backing fabric to the size needed for the quilt.
  19. Layer the backing facing down, with the batting and quilt top facing up. Use the quilter's curved safety pins to hold the layers together. Quilt as desired.
  20. Bind the quilt with the remaining yellow fabric.

JOANN Hacks:

  • Use the erasable marker for all tracing so it can be removed when the quilt is completed.
  • Use masking tape to hold the poster board pattern to the fabric.
