  • Large Canvas Tote Bag Navy
  • Liquitex Freestyle Small Painting Knife #17
  • Stencil of Choice
  • Palette Paper
  • Craft Sticks
  • Masking Tape
  • Optional: Covering for Work Surface, Gloves

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Protect work surface with paper or plastic (recommended) and assemble supplies & tools.
  2. Prepare paint. Scoop out 4 piles of gloss gel, each with 1 1/2 teaspoons on to palette paper. Squeeze out approximately 1 teaspoon of each color on to the gloss gel piles. One color per pile.
  3. Using the palette knife, mix each color until all gel and paint are combined. Be sure to clean palette knife in between each color mixture.
  4. Lay tote bag out on a flat surface and smooth out any creases. Bag can be ironed beforehand also. Place stencil in the middle of the tote bag or any desired location and secure using masking tape. Ensure stencil is as flat as possible on top of tote bag and there are no gaps.
  5. Using the palette knife, scoop small amounts at a time and apply the paint using a loose dabbing technique. Be careful not to get the paint underneath the stencil, use non-painting hand/fingers to hold down any spots where stencil may lift. Paint one color at a time in random, spread out locations as desired.
  6. Repeat with all colors, wiping palette knife in between.
  7. When finished, carefully remove the tape, and slowly lift stencil from the corner.
  8. The palette knife can be used to scrape off any paint that bled under the stencil to touch up.
  9. Allow 24-48 hours to dry.

JOANN HACKS:

  • To avoid paint getting under the stencil, adhesive stencil may also be used.
  • Be careful when applying colors on top of each other, mixing may occur.
